Colleton River
The long drive into Colleton River is impressive, a ride through forests of live oaks that cushion residents from the bustle of the world outside their gates. Developed in 1990, Colleton River’s two 18-hole courses, one by Jack Nicklaus and one by Pete Dye, hosted filming of the critically panned but nostalgic golf movie, The Legend of Bagger Vance. Each course has its own clubhouse, but one private club membership buys access to both. In a way, Colleton River’s golf designs are a refreshing change from nearby private clubs with Fazio fetishes. Colleton River members are willing to pay the price of variety -- and quality.
